Library

Students visit the library both on a scheduled and independent basis. Each class has a regular weekly time slot for lessons and book exchange. (40 minutes)  Classroom teachers can sign up for additional research or library skills time. Individual students may visit the library during the day with teacher permission.

Check-out:

• Kindergarten and First: One book
• Second – Third: Two books
• Fourth-Fifth: Three books

This reflects the number of books a student may have out at any one time, however, student have access to the library daily and may come down each day, with teacher permission, for a new book, provided they return the previous ones. Books are checked out for 2 weeks at a time and can be renewed if the book is brought into the library.

Students in 4th and 5th grade have the opportunity to become helpers in the library.  These students are asked to give up one recess a week for this job.  They usually spend about 20 minutes each week helping students choose and check out books, put books away, and take care of our computers.  Students must fill out an application. 

Junior Librarians must have the following qualities:

• Exceptionally well-behaved
• Able to keep up with class work
• Able to set a good example in and out of the library
• Honesty
• Able to show up on time
• Willingness to help others
• Can follow directions
• Work independently
• Be a problem solver

Common Sense Media

The South Kitsap School District has adopted curriculum that incorporates internet safety and citizenship into our library and classroom lessons.  While we have been already incorporating many of these ideas into our lessons at Burley Glenwood, this curriculum provides all of the libraries with a standard curriculum that all students will be learning.  As I introduce new topics to your child, I always encourage them to talk to their parents about the topics we discuss.  Please take moment to look over our curriculum at:

There are six lessons for each grade level Kindergarten through 5th grade that we do every year.  

Students in grades 3rd through 5th grade are also encouraged to do Digital Passport or Interland

Damaged or Lost Book Policy

Accidents happen. Puppies chew, juice containers leak in backpacks, younger siblings use them for creative art projects, and books get left on the playground the day it rains or maybe they fly off on vacation.

Most children are responsible. If a book becomes accidentally damaged, we stress the responsibility to report and, if necessary, to replace a book which gets damaged while in their care.  Depending on the type of damage, there may be a small fine.

If a book accidentally rips, please do not attempt to repair it at home. We use special book tapes and glues, which resist heat and won’t discolor.  Return the book with a note and we will repair it. If a book becomes damaged beyond use, you will be billed for the replacement cost.

You may replace the book, provided the same type is replaced. Please check with us before replacing a hardback edition, most of our books are library editions, meant to take heavy use, and not the trade editions sold in bookstores. If major damage occurs, please return the book with a note  then we will know that you know the book is damaged and will need to be replaced.  

If your child returns a book damaged beyond use and you are not aware of an obligation, borrowing privileges are withheld until it is paid for.
